Research Interests

I am interested in the evolutionary processes that shaped the present architecture of genes and genomes. In my PhD I focused on overlapping genes, i.e., pairs of protein-coding genes whose coding regions overlap. I have developed new statistical methods and applied comparative genomics approach to examine how mutation and selection shape the evolution of overlapping genes. This work has lead to the discovery of hidden genes within the genomes of several viruses.
