Summary of Procedures
Whether you are a PhD candidate or a postdoc, the following general procedure applies when facing conflict, harassment, or misconduct:
1. Seek Confidential Advice
a. Start with an informal, confidential consultation with one of the designated advisors, ombudspersons, or counseling services.
b. This allows you to understand your options and rights without initiating a formal process.
2. Document the Issue
a. Maintain written records (emails, notes, screenshots) of the events or exchanges involved, especially in cases of harassment, bullying, or misconduct.
3. Choose a Path: Informal or Formal Resolution
a. Many cases can be resolved through informal mediation, particularly through the Graduate Campus or Employee Assistance Offices.
b. In cases involving legal violations or institutional regulations, a formal complaint may be submitted (e.g., to the RSB Committee or Ombudsperson).
4. Engage Faculty-Level Contacts
a. The Faculty of Science may have additional support structures, including program coordinators, equal opportunity officers, and departmental ombudspersons.
5. Follow-up and Monitoring
a. After action is taken, follow-up support (psychological or administrative) is available.
b. UZH is committed to ensuring that individuals who come forward are protected from retaliation.
