Underwear in the Service of Soil Research

The citizen science project “Proof by Underpants” has been awarded the Ig Nobel Prize in the Soil Science category.

On 3 September, the Ig Nobel Prizes were awarded in Zurich – for the first time outside the United States in their 35-year history.
Professor Marcel van der Heijden, Franz Bender from Agroscope, science journalist Atlant Bieri and citizen science expert Pia Viviani received the prize for the project, which involved 1,000 people across Switzerland burying more than 2,000 pairs of cotton underwear in gardens, fields and meadows to investigate soil quality.
