Extreme Current Identification

This process is used to identify all of the extreme currents in a stoichiometric network, which are quite similar to extreme pathways [1]. All reactions in the provided network must be irreversible, or else an error will be reported. The edges of the flux space produced by this type of network have been termed extreme currents [1, 2], whereas those of the more commonly used formulation have been termed extreme pathways [1, 2].

The algorithm used to compute extreme currents is a variation of that described by Schilling et. al. [2]. It is susceptible to combinatorial explosion, and therefore may not work well for large stoichiometric networks.
