Research Interests

My research interests are varied but centre on the role of people within ecosystems. I am interested in measuring biodiversity in human dominated urban systems – my Master thesis explored the host-parasite networks of solitary hymenoptera in urban family gardens. I also have a strong interest in how conservation efforts and increased biodiversity feed back into the health and well-being of humans. These interests have developed from working as a Ranger in urban environments where local green spaces have increased social and cultural value for the populations that access them. As a consequence of this interest, I also have a strong focus on how ecology and biodiversity research can be translated into policy and conservation actions that seek to benefit both humans and wildlife, including whether participatory approaches can confer greater social cohesion and better conservation outcomes. Within the framework of the URPP GCB I will be focusing on ecosystem services and how we can optimize existing research at the test sites to incorporate measurements of the key ecosystem services at each site and across the project.
