Research Interests

Diverse plant communities are known to be more productive than monocultures of single species communities, and the contrast in productivity further increases with the age of the community. But what causes this strengthening biodiversity effect over time is not fully understood. In my work, I use grassland plant species to study how a long-term selection of a plant community in monocultures, in comparison to diverse plant communities, influences the interactions between plants and soil micro-organisms. Furthermore, I test whether accumulation of pathogens in monoculture communities — a well-known problem in agricultural monocultures — forces monoculture plants to lower their investment in productivity in order to invest more in pathogen defense
